Community reporting can preserve important memories, explain local initiatives and help people stay informed. It also carries responsibility: the people being reported on are real individuals, and inaccurate or careless coverage can cause lasting harm.
Verify before publishing
Confirm names, dates, locations and the central facts of a story. Where possible, speak directly with organizers or people involved. Distinguish what a reporter personally observed from what a source has said. If information cannot be verified, say so or leave it out.
Provide context
A photograph or short video rarely tells the whole story. Explain the event's purpose, who organized it and what is known. Avoid headlines that exaggerate or imply facts not supported by the reporting.
Respect privacy and consent
Ask permission before recording interviews or publishing identifiable images where consent is appropriate. Take special care with children and vulnerable people. Do not publish private contact details, sensitive personal information or images that could expose someone to harm.
Credit sources and respect copyright
Identify photographers, speakers, organizations and source material where applicable. Do not assume that a video, nasheed, photograph or lecture found online is free to reuse. Obtain permission or use material under a licence that permits the intended use, and follow the licence terms.
Separate fact from opinion
Label commentary clearly. Give readers enough information to understand the basis of a claim, and avoid presenting rumours as established facts. When covering a dispute, seek relevant responses and do not imply that one person's account represents every participant.
Correct errors transparently
If a material error is discovered, review the evidence, update the article or caption and explain the correction when appropriate. Readers should have a way to contact the publisher about inaccuracies.
